- On Eating Ourselves
One particular selling point for the Sufism (Islamic Mysticism) is that it is shrouded. Every instance begs to question our belonging and pulls us into this world where faith, art, and ritual coalesce. To western observers, it is also the islam not contrived by fear; the vein of light in a increasingly foggy political climate (by representation). As tourists and the tourism industry function, culture must meet us at our tastes and often times, our ignorances. Sufism is the desirable islam to consumers we blind ourselves by provocation to watch others performing color, light, devotion, trance, the unknown. All irregardless of the nuance and spirit of devotion in those "common others" (in this case Arabs) around us, those eclipsed and of a profoundly different set of stereotypes not of their own. In the light of consumption, we have set the stage for the continuation of the performing role of the Arab as the Arab in performing role. If not exploding himself, then grinning and on display; a synthesis of shoveling imagery to sew up the regional complex wound of representation into oriental fixtures.
"During one of the shows I watched, a large group of tourists got up and left in the middle
of the show. I suppose they did not experience the trance-like effect."

"You understand then that it's not your breath, it's God's breath living you from the inside out."
